Discover the story behind the World Cup, explore why football is known as soccer in the United States, and find out how it became the world’s most popular sport.
The 2026 Men’s FIFA World Cup will take place in North America, bringing the world’s largest sporting event to our continent. From its beginnings in England to its rise as a global phenomenon, John Lyons explores the history of football (soccer) using film clips, photographs, and newspaper accounts from around the world. He traces the evolution of the World Cup, examines why the sport was slow to gain popularity in the United States, and highlights the recent surge of interest in the women’s game.
