Join us for a fascinating look at the history of the American picture postcard, which began right here in Illinois!
Discover how postcards have evolved over the years and what these small pieces of mail can tell us about American history and culture. The first American picture postcards were printed for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Since those early Victorian designs, billions of postcards have captured everyday life, from train stations and street scenes to advertisements, cartoons, local landmarks, and much more.
Presented by Illinois Humanities Road Scholar Katherine Hamilton-Smith, founding curator of the Curt Teich Postcard Archives, the world’s largest collection of postcards at the Newberry Library, this program explores the documentary power and historical significance of postcards.
